Ornamental fencing

The look of iron.
None of the rust.

Powder-coated aluminium ornamental fence across Fort Dodge and the surrounding areas.

Ornamental

Wrought iron looks.
Aluminium upkeep.

Ornamental fence is what people mean when they picture a black metal fence with pickets: the look of old wrought iron, without the rust, the scraping and the repainting. Modern ornamental is powder-coated aluminium, so it does not rot like wood or corrode like bare steel, and it keeps the view instead of walling it off. You see it around front yards, pools and commercial frontages for exactly that reason.

Pick the picket top that suits the house, from plain flat to classic spear.

02

Powder-coated aluminium

It will not rot, rust through or need repainting every few years.

03

Racked to your slope

Panels rack to follow ground that falls, instead of stepping down it.

Ornamental Fencing

The fence you
can see through.

Ornamental is the one fence people put up at the front of the house, because it marks the line and keeps the dog in without hiding the yard behind it. Powder-coated aluminium panels, posts set deep and concreted the same as any other fence we build, and matching gates hung on posts sized for the swing.

Wood Privacy Fencing

The one people
picture when they
say “fence.”

Cedar and treated pine privacy fence, board-on-board or shadowbox, built straight and set deep. It is the classic backyard fence, and it is the one where a straight top line and a plumb post every time is the whole game.

Chain Link Fencing

Tough, affordable,
and done right.

Galvanised and black vinyl-coated chain link for yards, dogs, pools and commercial lots. It is the most affordable fence there is, which is exactly why the posts and the tension still have to be done properly, so it does not sag in two summers. This is one of our real jobs.

The part you cannot see

A fence is only as
good as its posts.

Anybody can screw pickets to a rail. Whether your fence is standing straight in five years is decided underground, before the pretty part goes on: how deep the posts go, how they are set, and whether someone called before they dug. Here is the part of the job that actually matters, and that a lot of people skip.

2 ft
Set deep, locked in

Most posts go about two feet into the ground and get locked in with concrete, deep and solid enough to stand straight for years. When a job calls for the most hold against frost heave, we drive (pound) the posts deeper still, below the frost line. Either way, it’s the post set right, not the pickets, that keeps a fence from leaning.

811
Called before we dig

Under Iowa Code Chapter 480, calling Iowa One Call (811) before augering a new post is not optional, it is the law, with two business days’ notice and penalties up to $20,000 for digging blind. Gas, power and fibre run through a lot of yards. We make the call, every time, before a single hole gets dug.

115 mph
Built to take the wind

Iowa builds to a 115 mph design wind speed, and a privacy fence is a sail. Posts sized and spaced right, set deep and concreted properly, are what keep a fence standing through the storms that flatten the cheap ones. That is what “structurally sound and built to withstand” actually means.

Sources: Iowa Code Chapter 480 (Iowa One Call), and the frost-depth (42 in) and design-wind-speed (115 mph) values Iowa adopts under the 2015 International Residential Code. This is general information, not a code ruling on your specific project.

Why Precision

Done with
precision.

A small Fort Dodge crew that does fencing and the landscaping around it, and does the underground part that decides whether a fence lasts.

Reviewed on Google

Every review says the same three things: quick, honest, and built to last. One customer wrote he was “confident the work is structurally sound and built to withstand.”

Honest pricing

A real number, up front, and no games. “Honest pricing, quick work” is a direct quote from our Google profile. Built right, priced fair.

The crew shows up

Two hard-working guys who communicate, turn up when they say, and do it fast. That is in the reviews, and it is why they get recommended.

Fence and yard, one call

We do the fence and the landscaping around it, so you are not chasing two contractors to put your yard back together after the posts go in.

How it works

Set deep.
Built straight.

The difference between a fence that lasts and a fence that leans is entirely in the part you cannot see. So that is the part we do not rush: the locate, the depth, and the set.

We locate the line, call Iowa One Call before we dig, and set the posts deep and concreted properly. The part you never see is the part we care about most.

03. Fence up, yard back

The fence goes in straight, the gate swings true, and the yard gets put back with grading, sod and cleanup. Done with precision.

Good to know

Questions,
answered.

Is ornamental fence steel or aluminium?
We build it in powder-coated aluminium. It gives you the wrought-iron look without the rust problem, it does not rot like wood, and it never needs scraping and repainting. The powder coat is baked on rather than brushed on, so it wears far better than paint.
Will it follow a yard that slopes?
Yes. Ornamental panels rack, meaning the pickets stay vertical while the rails follow the fall of the ground, so you get a fence line that tracks the slope instead of a staircase of level sections with gaps underneath. On a steep run we will tell you which way looks better before we order.
What kinds of fence do you build?
Wood privacy (cedar and treated pine), chain link (galvanised and black vinyl-coated), vinyl privacy and picket, and powder-coated aluminium ornamental. Plus gates, from a single walk gate to a double drive gate or an ornamental entrance. Residential and commercial.
Do you do the landscaping too, or just the fence?
Both. Installing a fence tears up a yard, so we grade and level, lay sod or seed, haul off the spoil, and put in mulch, edging and planting beds along the line. One crew for the fence and the ground it stands in.
Do you really call 811 before you dig?
Every time. In Iowa, calling Iowa One Call (811) before digging a new post is the law under Iowa Code Chapter 480, with two business days’ notice, because gas, power and fibre lines run through yards. Digging blind risks your safety, your utilities and a fine up to $20,000. We make the call first.
How deep do you set the posts?
About two feet deep and locked in concrete. For the most hold against frost heave we can drive (pound) posts deeper still, below the frost line. Setting posts deep and concreting them properly is the single biggest reason a fence stays straight.
My old fence is leaning, do I need a whole new one?
Not always. Often a few heaved or rotted posts, or a storm-damaged section, can be repaired for a fraction of a new fence. We will tell you honestly when a repair makes sense and when a fence is genuinely past it, rather than selling you a replacement either way.
Do I need a permit for a fence?
It depends on your city and where the fence sits. Many Iowa towns do not require a building permit for a residential fence but still set rules on height (often lower in a front yard than a back yard) and on corner-lot sight lines. We build to your local code and can point you to the rules for your property.
How do I get a price?
